Tswaing means place of salt in Setswana
Out and about on Women’s Day, we decided to visit Tswaing Meteorite Crater, located North of Pretoria.
About 35 minutes drive from Pretoria East, entrance is R30 per person and a guided tour is available at R250.
Tswaing Meteorite Crater in Ditsong is one of four impact craters in the world, and is found in our backyard here in Pretoria.
Tswaing also houses the remains of an old salt factory, which closed in 1956.
Tswaing Crater is a bowl shaped geographical feature, caused by a 50m chondrite (stony meteorite) 220 000 years ago, which exploded and vaporized on impact.
The crater can host four simultaneous soccer matches and half a million spectators.
A hike route of 7.5 km in total with numerous view points around the hiking trail.
Tswaing Crater is currently on the tentative list as a World Heritage site.
Interesting fact: South Africa is yet to officially jump on the PokemonGo band wagon however my boyfriend discovered Pokestops on the hiking trail
What a beautiful natural wonder in Gauteng.
