I was recently invited by Zomato to a sushi and beer pairing evening at John Dory’s in Faerie Glen situated in the new centre at Olympus Plaza.
Sushi and Beer pairing, sounds unconventional but it actually is a great combination, when paired properly. We were treated to the best John Dory’s sushi, seated at the sushi bar made by our own sushi chef.
The owner Ian introduced all the beers and the sushi it was paired with.
We started with CBC Amber Weiss with a prawn roll, pickled ginger, wasabi and teriyaki sauce. The teriyaki sauce really added punch paired with this beer.
Second pairing was Devil’s Peak First Light Golden Ale with salmon roll, avocado, cucumber and soy sauce.
3rd pairing was a flavour sensation for our taste buds, Jack Black Lumber Jack Amber Ale with a prawn avalanche, ginger, 7 spice and Japanese mayo.
My best taste sensation was the fourth pairing of Cluver & Jack Apple cider with fruit futomaki and teriyaki mayo. I am not a fan of fruit in sushi but this pairing really went together so well. The cider is crisp like a fine wine. Definitely need to get my hands on a case or two.
Lastly we were treated to an open pairing with Devils Peak Pale Ale which i have to admit is a very bitter beer. Ian asked the foodies what would they pair with this beer which was very difficult to come up with a combination. I suggest smoked salmon roses or even eel to compliment the smokiness of the beer.
Next time you in the mood for sushi, try some local complimentary craft beer instead of the usual wine combination.
