After a drive into the estate at Forum Homini Hotel, we pulled up to Roots Restaurant just after sunset for my birthday dinner.

We were seated in the dim lit dining room with other guests.

The evening started off with an amuse bouche of beef carpaccio.

We were then served various breads, white, pepper and sesame with air whipped butter and patè.

Salmon Fish Cake;

Cured salmon, apple, celery mint, chili mayo, spring onion and lime gel paired with a glass of Spioenkop, Riesling white wine.

Squid, sweet corn purée, patty pan, popped rice, black garlic purée and sweet corn paired with Gabriëlskloof, Magdelana wine with lime notes which complimented the fish very well.

Cured duck breast

My favourite dish of the evening was the duck leg terrine which was moist and full of flavour served with an onion crust, Parma tarragon ketchup, parsnip purée, parsnip shavings and fennel paired with Donkiesbaai, Pinot noir.

Beef fillet

Parmesan custard, asparagus, potato fondant, truffle crumbled, roasted leeks, snail velouté paired with Shannon a Mount Bullet Merlot.

Raspberry Panna Cotta

Pearls, fresh berries, Malibu jellies, blackcurrant sorbet and a vanilla crumble paired with Fable Mountain Rosé. This was my favourite dessert of the evening. IMG_4707

Hazelnut Meringue

Fennel meringue, salted fennel chocolate shards, toasted hazelnuts, honeycomb, coffee ice cream and Amarula Crémeux paired with a lovely dessert wine Newton Johnson, L’illla.

We ended the evening with a lovely gift from Roots of fudge, ginger jellies and chocolate brownies.

What an amazing evening at Roots- Forum Homini Hotel, definitely five star service and cuisine.
