I finally got the opportunity to dine at Cube Tasting Kitchen in their new premises at Maboneng. Cube Tasting Kitchen is situated at the The Cosmopolitan in Albrecht street.

Cube Tasting Kitchen has been on my my try-before- you- die list for quite some time. I was so happy that my friends surprised me with this dinner to celebrate my recent engagement. As we were dropped off we were welcomed by staff to the entrance of the restaurant. We were greeted by the owner and his mother and seated in an intimate corner, this was appreciated as we had a lot of catching up to do. The restaurant was filled to capacity of 65 diners for the evening.

We were served a welcome drink of either Le Lude Brut or Rose Nv. Disclaimer our dinner was an 11 course tasting meal which changes every 2 months, I will be taking you through our gastronomic journey for the evening.

Course 1:

A summer salad of duck, spicy satay, stone fruit, figs, peanut textures and green onion paired with Spioenkop Riesling 2015.

Course 2:

Tribute to our staples: Polenta cakes, corn custard, deep fried corn ice cream, puffed corn and popcorn salt, blackened corn and corn flowers paired with Radford Dale Chardonnay 2016.

Course 3:

Smoked mushroom: smoked shimeji, shiitake and oyster mushrooms, truffle cream, roasted garlic, gruyere crumble and rosemary dust.

Course 4:

Grapefruit cured salmon: asparagus grapefruit salsa, raddish, saffron mayo, sour cream and chives ice cream, soya foam paired with Steenberg Semillon 2015.

Course 5:

Lobster: lobster section, leek and celeriac purée, caper berries, passion fruit dressing, champagne jelly and a poppy seed tuille.

Course 6:

Palette cleanser: everybody’s favourite Nitro meringues of blood orange and gin. The meringues are cooked at your table with nitrogen and served immediately for your entertainment.

Course 7:

Pork Belly: roasted belly, apple purée, roasted garlic emulsion and apple chips served with Fledge & Co Katvis Pinot Noir 2015.

Course 8:

Malay ostrich: ostrich fillet, lentil curry bites, Mango and mint preserve, cashews and carrots paired with Southern Right Pinotage 2015 . This was my favourite course as the ostrich was cooked to perfection, soft and tender and seasoned well.

Cheese course: cheese mousse, parmeasan tuille, candied walnuts, stewed fruit and cheese zabaglione paired with Mullinex Straw

Course 10:

Black and white dessert: sesame sponge, olive and white chocolate brownie, white chocolate jelly, blackberry delight and black powder served with a Shiraz.

Course 11:

Flower power: floral elements of rose, hibiscus, fuschia and elderflower served with a dessert wine.

To end off the evening chefs Lisa and Darren joined our table and presented me with a beautifully plated congratulations in icing sugar.

Darren also took us on  a tour of the cellar and the The Cosmopolitan Bar. An incredible evening with the most delicious and thought after cuisine and great service from friendly staff and hands on management.

I was really fond of the owner doing our wine pairing for the evening and all the chefs coming to our table to explain the next course.

I can see why Cube Tasting Kitchen is one of the top 25 restaurants in Johannesburg and in my opinion the best. I would recommend you use a cab or an Uber to take you home to ensure you enjoy this dining experience to its fullest.
