IMG_0202Hartebeespoort is known for the famous Hartebeespoort dam. There is a  number of things to do and see in this town that is only an hour’s drive from Pretoria and Johannesburg. For starters, one can enjoy a boat ride and experience the spectacular dam even though it has been invaded by an alien plant (the municipality is working on a plan to remove these plants) as well as stop at the spectacular view points around the dam.

The most popular thing to do in Hartebeespoort is to visit the Hartebeespoort Ariel Cable Way. The cable way was constructed in 1973 and was upgraded in 2010 with six 14 seater imported cable cars from Switzerland. It offers you panoramic views of Hartebeespoort and Magaliesberg and surrounds.  The cost is R195 per adult and R115 per child (4 -14 years).IMG_7173

A visit to the Zoo and Snake Park is also a favourite spot visitors experience. One can see different wild life including crocodiles, tigers, monkeys and giant tortoises. There is also a seal and snake show that takes place on the weekends, please check with the zoo staff for show times and the entrance fee is R100 per adult and R50 for children under the age of 12. You can also take a boat ride on the dam at a cost of R50 per adult and R30 per child (3 – 12 years).

Hartebeespoort has a number of restaurants and coffee shops, but one of the most popular places to visit is the French Toast Koffie Kafee which was established in 2014. It was built as part of a movie set for the film titled “French Toast” and has since been operating as a restaurant ever since the movie director said it was a wrap. There is miniature Eiffel Tower and Love Lock bridge where you can latch your engraved sign of love, please note that there is a stall on-site to purchase and engrave a lock should you not have one. The café is located in the same centre as an Hartebeespoort Aquarium so you can pass the time there should you have to wait for your table as my family did.

The food is also spectacular! French Toast Koffie Kafee serves delicious French Toast with every dish coupled with a variety of toppings from sweet to savory. Their fillet steak is fantastic and cooked to perfection however as stated before be prepared to wait as this place gets very busy during lunch.

There is also a number of different types of accommodation available in the area including hotels, self catering resorts and lodges should you wish to extend your stay in Hartebeespoort. We had the opportunity to visit Red Ivory Lodge whichis located in a mountainous area and offers beautiful views of  Hartebeespoort and surrounds.

These pictures were taken at Red Ivory Lodge.

I hope you are inspired by this blog post to visit Hartebeespoort. A small town with a lot of activities for young and old.
